Integrating the principles of Ayurveda into your routine
share
Today, more and more people are turning to natural and holistic approaches to care for their body and mind. Ayurveda, this ancient traditional Indian medicine, is gaining popularity thanks to its principles of balance and harmony. I have also written a first complementary article on the rituals of Ayurveda which you can find here .
Understanding the principles of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is based on the concept of balance between three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—which represent the different energies present within each of us. Each individual has a unique constitution, a singular blend of these three doshas, which defines their specific needs in terms of health and well-being.
According to Ayurveda, the key to an effective skincare routine lies in the ability to identify your dominant dosha and adopt appropriate practices. This can include dietary choices, physical exercises, meditation techniques, as well as skin and hair care.
The Vata dosha
Associated with air and space, the Vata dosha is characterized by lightness, mobility, and creativity. Vata types tend to have dry skin, fine hair, and fluctuating energy. They will appreciate nourishing products, warmed plant oils, and slow, gentle massage techniques.
Example routine for Vata dosha:
- Morning :
- Start the day with a glass of warm water with lemon to stimulate digestion.
- Do a gentle yoga session with grounding postures like Child's Pose ( Balasana ) or Warrior Pose ( Virabhadrasana ).
- Afternoon :
- Take a 10-minute meditative break to calm your mind.
- Massage your skin with warmed sesame oil to nourish and soothe tension.
- Evening :
- Take a warm shower with relaxing essential oils like lavender.
- Eat a light, hot dinner, such as vegetable soup or a mild curry.
The Pitta dosha
Linked to fire and water, the Pitta dosha manifests as great intensity, determination, and intelligence. Pitta individuals often have sensitive skin, fine hair, and boundless energy. They will find balance through soothing products, refreshing oils, and treatments that calm and deeply moisturize.
Example routine for Pitta dosha:
- Morning :
- Drink coconut water to soothe and hydrate your body first thing in the morning.
- Practice refreshing breathing exercises like alternate nostril breathing ( Nadi Shodhana ).
- Afternoon :
- Apply a cooling oil like peppermint oil to the skin.
- Eat light, fresh meals, such as cucumber salad or berry salad.
- Evening :
- Take a warm shower and tone your skin with rose water to soothe your skin.
- Do a meditation session to reduce stress and calm your mind before going to sleep.
The Kapha dosha
Associated with water and earth, the Kapha dosha is characterized by stability, patience, and gentleness. Kapha types generally have thicker skin and hair, as well as moderate energy. They will benefit from stimulating products, light oils, and dynamic massage techniques to stimulate circulation.
Example routine for Kapha dosha:
- Morning :
- Start the day with ginger tea to stimulate digestion.
- Do an energizing yoga session with dynamic postures like the sun salutation ( Surya Namaskar ).
- Afternoon :
- Take a brisk walk or light jog to stimulate circulation.
- Consume spicy and stimulating foods such as black pepper or ginger.
- Evening :
- Massage your skin with a light oil like sunflower oil.
- End the day with an energizing drink like cinnamon tea.
Adopt appropriate care rituals
Beyond products, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of daily skincare rituals. Whether it's a warm oil body massage, dry hair brushing, or morning meditation, these practices, repeated daily, help stimulate circulation, eliminate toxins, and reconnect with yourself. Take the time to explore different techniques and find the ones that work best for you. With consistency and patience, you'll see the benefits these rituals have on your overall well-being.
Listen to your body's signals
Ayurveda teaches us to listen to the needs of our body and mind. Learn to identify signs of imbalance in your doshas and adapt your routine accordingly. For example, if you experience fatigue, anxiety, or sleep disturbances, this may be a sign that your Vata dosha needs to be rebalanced. Focus on nourishing treatments, warm oils, and moments of relaxation. Conversely, if you notice redness, irritation, or inflammation, your Pitta dosha may need to be calmed. Opt for soothing, cooling, and hydrating products.
