DIY Refreshing and Soothing Mist for Summer

With the arrival of the hot weather, our skin and our minds are looking for lightness. Nothing beats a refreshing homemade mist , easy to prepare, to feel better instantly. This simple and natural gesture is ideal for soothing the skin, delicately perfuming your environment and adding a touch of freshness to your summer routine.

In this lighthearted article, discover why you should adopt a summer mist, how to make it, what precautions to take, and how to incorporate it into your natural routine!

Why adopt a refreshing mist in summer?

In summer, the sun, sweat, and heat can weaken the skin. A natural mist can help:

  • Immediately refresh face, neck or body after prolonged exposure
  • Soothe skin irritations , redness or tightness after sun exposure;
  • Lightly moisturize without feeling greasy
  • Perfume naturally with essential oils like lavender or mint
  • Create a relaxing atmosphere at home, in bed linens, textiles or in the car

This sensory gesture is also part of an eco-responsible approach, because it promotes simple, natural and often local ingredients!

The ingredients needed for a homemade mist

To create a personalized summer mist, you only need a few elements. They are infinitely customizable. I recommend experimenting with several combinations to find the one that suits you.

Water base: hydrosol

  • Lavender hydrosol (soothing, healing)
  • Rose hydrosol (refreshing, tonic)
  • Peppermint hydrosol (immediate cooling effect)
  • Orange blossom hydrosol (calming, delicate and vegetal fragrance)

Essential oils (optional!)

You can use any essential oils you like to suit your tastes. Be careful, however, with photosensitizing essential oils, which are dangerous if exposed to the sun. Always use organic essential oils. Do not exceed 1% concentration for cutaneous use, as this can cause burns or damage to your skin. Here are some of my favorite scents:

  • True lavender or Spike lavender : soothing, relaxing
  • Peppermint : refreshing, stimulating
  • Lemon : invigorating, purifying

Other useful ingredients

  • 40–70% alcohol or organic vodka : This helps dissolve the essential oil and prolong the shelf life of the mist. If you don't plan on applying it to your skin, opt for 90% alcohol!
  • Vegetable glycerin (optional): to moisturize the skin
  • Aloe Vera : for light after-sun care and extra hydration

Be careful with alcohol or vodka, which can dry out the skin if used too often.

Container

You can use a small, recycled glass bottle. You can then use the product as a toner by applying it with your hands or using a disc.

On the other hand, the most suitable (and hygienic!) option will be the 100 ml glass spray bottle (ideal size). Choose a tinted amber bottle to protect your product from UV rays.

Simple Homemade Cooling Mist Recipe

Here is an easy recipe to adapt according to your preferences or desires:

Preparation :

  1. Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle using a funnel.
  2. Shake well before each use.
  3. Keep refrigerated for an even more refreshing effect!

Tips and ideas for everyday use

This mist can accompany you throughout the summer:

  • On the face and body : after a hot day or sun exposure
  • On textiles : curtains, sheets, clothes for a feeling of fresh linen
  • In the ambient air : to naturally perfume and soothe the atmosphere
  • As an anti-stress spray : spray one spray in your hands, inhale deeply

Precautions for use

  • Skin test : Apply first to a small area (crease of the elbow).
  • Children and pregnant women : avoid essential oils or seek professional advice.
  • Avoid contact with eyes : spray 20 cm from the face.
